What foods should I be eating this month?

In traditional chinese medicine it is important to eat not only fresh fruits and vegetables but locally grown more importantly. Since our bodies adapt to seasonal changes, so does the landscape and soil. Florida's soil is more sustainable for citrus fruits, which is why Floridians should consume more citrus in their diet to obtain Vitamin C. Eating locally grown food is our bodies way of living and adapting with nature.

In May we see many fruits and vegetables that are in season. They include:

blueberries, cucumbers, greens, herbs, nectarines, peaches, plums, potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes, valencias, and ruby red grapefruits.

Following 5 element theory, we should consume one of each color: green, red, yellow, white, and black to supply our body and organs with proper nutrition. Ideally to eat all 5 colors you can have greens, tomatoes, sweet corn, potatoes, and blueberries everyday. You can substitute grapefruit with tomatoes, and nectarines/peaches with sweet corn. Cucumbers fall under the white foods category, unless you keep the peel on which then buts it under green and white. Blueberries count as a dark food so it falls under the black colored foods category as do plums.

Check out your local farmers market to pick the freshest crop for your body.
